Merriam was classified as third class city on October 28,1950 and then became second class city rank on January 18, 1957.
The city belongs to the nationally ranked Shawnee Mission School District, an influential public educaton system.
Merriam is the proud home to Shawnee Mission Medical Center, the first ever hospital built in Johnson County. This up-to-date, state-of-the-art facility caters not only Merriam but also all the northern residents of Johnson County.
Roughly 3,400 businesses are located in a part of the county signing on over 56,000 people.
Now, Merriam is a dynamic community, settled just 8 miles south of downtown Kansas City and easy access in the metro. However the transportation methods have developed from trolley lines and railroads to automobiles, the city continues to evolove and prosper within the region.
